Q&A: How Do I Practice at Home?

This is in response to students asking where they can find resources to help them practice at home when they can't make it to class. This post will focus on online videos because:
  • They're immediately available. No need to wait for a DVD or book to ship. You can get started right away.

  • Many are free. You can try a wide variety to see what you like without any risk.

  • You get more bang for your buck. Instead of constantly doing the same sequence over and over again, for about the same price as one DVD you can get unlimited access to a library of hundreds or thousands of videos for a month. Do a different practice every day and never get bored. This ties into the next point...

  • You can customize your practice. Only have 20 minutes? No problem, you can find tons of shorter sequences. Tight hips today? Search for a class that focuses on hip openers. Every day is different, and the practice that was right for us yesterday isn't always appropriate for today.
This is by no means a comprehensive list - but this will give you several good places to start, with options for every budget and level.

Offers a 15 day free trial. You can browse over 1,000 available classes by style, level, duration, or specific use (such as back pain or prenatal). If you're just starting out, or unsure what style to try, click over to their Beginner Center. You can take one of their 7 class beginner series in Anusara, Ashtanga, Hatha, Vinyasa or one of the other styles to get a feel for what you like. For full unlimited access you'll have to subscribe for $18/month, but they have some free content as well. You can click here for their Pose Video Library, for example.

Also offers a 15 day free trial with a monthly unlimited subscription option for $20. You can also search their classes by style, length, difficulty, and focus. They have hundreds of free videos, generally shorter in length, available here.

Another studio you'll need to subscribe to for full access at $15/month. Currently offering a 10 day free trial with coupon code: 10DAYSFREE. In addition to their archived classes, they also live stream certain classes that take place at their studio in Santa Monica. Check here for the live streaming schedule to see what's coming up.

Offers the cheapest membership yet, at $9/month. A new class is posted every day and you can check out what they have with a 14 day free trial.

There are tons of yoga videos available completely free. However, the quality varies, and it can take time to sift through them all to find some you like. You can take a look at Sadie Nardini's channel, where there are several hundred videos available including some full length classes. You can also subscribe to my channel, Yoga with Holly, where I'll be offering full length classes and pose explanations as well.

So there you have it, a few places to explore and help you start or maintain a home practice! Do you currently practice with online videos? Any recommendations you don't see here?

  1. I took a look at both the YogaGlo and YogaVibes website and really loved what they had to offer. They are both very indepth in their teaching and they offer a variety of yoga styles, teachers, and class lengths (time). For those looking for a free class I think YogaVibes is a wonderful tool, I myself will be utilizing the free resources! Thank you Holly for making this available so that we can learn from others and utilize our time for the optimum practice experience! :D
